Blu-ray Player Modification
Samsung BD-P3600
Following a head to head evaluation of Samsung's latest Blu-ray Player (BD-P3600) and Oppo Digital's first, and now widely heralded Blu-ray universal player (BDP-83) (See our posting on The Absolute Sound's Forum), we are now offering to modify both players, as we realize that there will be many people (audiophiles in particular) that may choose to go with the new Oppo Blu-ray player, as it has recently received and continues to receive very glowing reviews from various audio review websites and magazines. As for our own honest, objective comparison, after listening on two systems, we feel a Modified Samsung BD-P3600 Blu-ray Player is superior in both video and especially audio over a Modified Oppo Digital BDP-83 Blu-ray Player. We are not saying the new Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray Player is a bad player by any sense of the word. It is a very good player that has it's own advantages, in that it plays SACD, DVD-A, HDCD, etc, along with being able to play Blu-ray and DVD formats. But from a pure audio / video perspective, the Samsung Blu-ray player had a richer sound, with a lower bass floor. On the video, the Samsung was ever so slightly more detailed. The thinness of the Oppo is almost all but mitigated by the modification to the unit. The Oppo has a very detailed sound with just a slight hint of brightness left on the top end and a slight shallowness of the bass. It is much improved after the modification, as our first Oppo modification customer noted, who was amazed at the difference in the player after out modification. We must also state that a person's opinion of each player will differ based on the individuals room, type of speakers, depth and bass level and of course personal taste. I can say that the new Oppo Blu-ray Player was quite a bit better than any player Oppo has come out with as of yet.
Modification to the Samsung BD-P3600:As stated earlier, the modification to this unit is what really makes it stand out. We had tried modifying many other Blu-ray units, including Sony, Pioneer, and Panasonic, and cheaper Samsung units, but the Samsung BD-P3600 was just by and far better. The player takes on air, detail, three dimensionality and increased bass depth and defintion. You can hear every backround singer and creek of a ship, all with pin piont accuracy and location. CD sound is very good. The picture is stunning and very three-dimensional, with incredible detail and superb black levels. I would say the biggest improvement over the last unit we modified (Samsung BD-P2550/2500) and the new BD-P3600 is the video. The video is just of a different caliber in terms of detail and three dimensionality.
The new high resolution audio formats on Blu-ray using this modified player are incredible. We liken it to the difference between records and CDs. With the increased sampling rates and information found on Dolby True HD, and especially DTS HD Master, you get increased air, spaciousness, much better dynamics and an overall clarity that is just stunning. We were skeptics before we found the right player and modification, but are now very much pleased with these new formats. We have compared DVDs we own with the new Blu-rays and the difference is just remarkable. The Blu-rays not only look quite a bit better, but sound amazingly better as well, with some movies being transformed. And for the classic movie lovers out there, the remastering of old classics are stunning to watch on Blu-ray. Movies such as "The Searchers" and even "Robin Hood" are just breathtaking. Black and white movies, such as Casablanca, benefit greatly by the format as well, being more detailed and infinitely more three dimensional than on DVD. After you have experienced Blu-ray the way it should be, its hard to go back. We have been hooked watching Blu-ray movie after Blu-ray movie.

Modification to the Oppo Digital BDP-83 Blu-ray Player:As stated previously, the modification does make quite a difference. The video of the stock Oppo player was very stunning to begin with, so it did not have quite as a marked difference as with the modification to the Samsung Blu-ray player video. The audio is where the modification made the most difference. The BDP-83 in both my room and another individuals room, tended to have a thinness to to the top end and a shallowness to the bass. This made some recordings sound very clear and many others verge into the "analytical" and non-musical realm. With our modification, we were able to mitigate the vast majority of this thinness, leaving just a hint of brightness, as well as lower the bass floor substantially. This gave the music a clear, yet much more rounded musical picture. The added depth helped in bringing more substance and transparency to the bass. The person who let us try out his player was stunned at the difference he heard and was really quite thrilled.
